Man in serious condition in hospital after early morning knife attack in Queanbeyan

A 42-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in Canberra Hospital overnight following a knife attack in Queanbeyan.

New South Wales Police officers were called to Monaro Street in the city's east at around 1.30am and found the man, who is from near Jerrabomberra, with numerous stab wounds to his arms and legs.

According to police, the man had waved to a passing motorist on Bungendore Road, who stopped to help and called police.

A crime scene was secured earlier today and investigations led to a residential complex on Mowatt Street, which is being searched.

Detective Inspector Keith Price said there was “no further information” about the suspected attacker and his relationship with the 42-year-old.

“The police believe it may have been a targeted attack,” he said.

“At this time, and with the limited information available to us, there is nothing to indicate that there is a risk to the community.”

Among the “forensic evidence” seized was a large knife, but police do not yet know if that was the weapon used or if the stabbing “definitely took place” in the complex.

In this case, the seriously injured person covered a distance of more than 600 meters to the main road.

“We don't know the exact extent of his injuries at this stage, but… he had to run quite a distance before he signalled for help,” said Detective Inspector Price.

He also said that the driver who stopped to render assistance “may have saved the man's life.”

“It could have been much worse if [the motorist] wouldn't have stopped,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Queanbeyan Police or Crime Stoppers.
