Murder suspect arrested over dead man in Apache Junction home

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ (AZFamily) – A suspect is in custody after an Apache Junction man was found murdered in his home last weekend, according to police.

Chester Lee Rugel, 51, is in prison in connection with the death of 64-year-old Gilbert Tellez.

At around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, officers were called to a home on Palo Verde Drive, near Apache Trail and Ironwood Drive. Inside, police found Tellez dead with signs of injuries.

According to police, officers were able to quickly apprehend Rugel nearby. He was arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder.

Apache Junction police say it was an isolated incident that had nothing to do with domestic violence, but have not provided any information about what might have led to Tellez's death.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of Gilbert Tellez, 64, an Apache Junction resident who tragically lost his life Sunday evening,” police said in a social media post. “The impact of such a loss is deeply felt throughout our community and we extend our sincere condolences.”

Detectives are reviewing surveillance video from area homes and businesses to gather additional evidence. Anyone with information is asked to call AJPD at 480-982-8260.
