Harris and Trump face off in presidential debate on Tuesday

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – Vice President Kamala Harris will face Donald Trump in the presidential debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening. It is her first debate in the race for the White House and the only debate scheduled before the election on November 5.

Although presidential debates in the United States are not usually decisive in the election, they influence voters in the run-up to the election.

The former president questioned Harris' intelligence and her race as a black woman, but she seemed unfazed by the attack and ignored Trump's comments when asked to respond in a CNN interview.

The latest in a series of Trump rhetoric came over the weekend, when he vowed to prosecute and imprison election officials and political opponents he believes are fraudsters, repeating claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

Harris called Trump an “untrustworthy man” and said that if elected, he would pose an “extremely serious” threat to the nation.

The mood in the Democratic camp has improved after President Joe Biden abandoned his bid for re-election in favor of his deputy.

Kamala Harris officially accepted the Democratic Party's nomination for president last month at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, pledging to lead the country “for all Americans” and create an “economy of opportunity.”

According to the latest national polling averages for the two candidates, Harris is at 47 percent, just ahead of Trump at 44 percent.
