Hillside Endarasha: Kenya Power denies claim that faulty power line caused fire that killed 21 people

Nyeri – The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has denied responsibility for the tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy that killed 21 students.

The tragedy occurred on the night of Thursday, September 5, when a dormitory containing 156 boys caught fire.

According to reports, a line appeared to be faulty, so the inferno was probably traced back to the utility company.

However, after a brief investigation, Kenya Power assumed that the fire was an accident and not caused by an unstable internet connection.

“The line supplying the school is a low voltage line from Mweiga substation. When the fire occurred, the supply on this line was stable and no incidents were reported.

All Kenya Power equipment including meter, feeder, earthing, low voltage and high voltage fuses and transformer were intact. Two prepaid meters in the larger school complex were unaffected by the fire. This was the case for all other neighbouring customers supplied by the same transformer,” KPLC said.
