Taylor Swift criticized for hugging Trump supporter Brittany Mahomes

Taylor Swift is facing, um, fast Backlash from fans over her connection to Brittany Mahomes, an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump and wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is her boyfriend Travis Kelce's teammate and best friend.

The two were spotted embracing on the final day of the US Open yesterday, after much speculation online about the status of their closeness. Trouble began brewing over the weekend, as the 2024 National Football League season kicked off on September 5 with a Chiefs win over the Baltimore Ravens in attendance. Publications ran countless articles, from the varying focus on the presumed distance between Mahomes and Swift — since they were not sitting together in a shared box as they have in the past — at the opening game to their much-publicized embrace on September 8, which signaled to people that rumors of an apparent feud had dispelled.

Fans of the Grammy-winning, multi-platinum artist criticized Swift's outspoken anti-Trump rhetoric in her 2020 documentary. Miss Americain which she stated, “I have to be on the right side of history.” The core of the film revolves around Swift's self-reflection as an artist with a large, influential platform and her decision – without the support of her PR team, family and managers – to participate in political discourse, including advocating for women's and LGBTQ+ rights. In the emotional video, she expressed regret for not getting politically involved and speaking out before the 2016 presidential election.

She tweeted at the time: “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? 'When the looting starts, the shooting starts'??? We will vote you out in November. @realdonaldtrump.”

Some fans revisited the tweet, highlighting the discrepancy between Swift's words and her inaction: “Not a word about Palestine. Not a word about Trump using your face to promote him. Not a word about LGBTQ+ laws from the past few years or anything happening in your home state. Besties with a SA [sexual assault] Apologist and an avowed Trump supporter. This tweet and the year 2019, you are such a joke, wow!” (Another user linked to previous articles and tweets from Mahomes attacking Swift for writing about nothing but “boys and relationships,” the support she received from Trump for her support, and her defense of her brother-in-law in the face of his allegations of sexual assault.)

Trump, for his part, has used the connection to his advantage ahead of the presidential election, posting artificial intelligence-generated fake images of Swift and claiming there was a false, growing “Swifties for Trump” movement. So far, Swift, who publicly supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, has not endorsed Trump or Democratic candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Hey @taylorswift13 you dropped this,” wrote one user on X, attaching a picture of a book spine. The theme was repeated several times on X, as even the bot account that was posting lyrics from Swift's midnight posted the apt text: “Spineless in my Tomb of Silence”, a reference to the song “The Great War”.

A fan referred to the lyrics of “Peace,” a song by the celebrated folklore which allegedly refers to her ex-boyfriend and actor Joe Alwyn: “Your integrity makes me feel small / You paint dreamscapes on the wall / I talk shit to my friends / It's like I'm wasting your honor.” The person wrote: “She herself said that Joe Alwyn's integrity makes her feel small. I guess she found a man with whom that is not a problem.”

Another said, “I don't expect a billionaire to lead a revolution or anything. I'm just confused why someone would make a movie about standing up for what's right at all costs and then literally never stand up for anything again.”
