Marie Alvarado-Gil, a U.S. senator from California, is facing charges for allegedly inciting sexual harassment and promoting a hostile work environment.

A former employee has filed a detailed complaint accusing her of forcing him to perform sexual acts and firing him because he refused.

He is now suing for financial compensation for the claims and demanding compensation for emotional distress, lost income and the loss of his earning potential.

“Sexual compensation”

The lawsuit was filed Thursday by Chad Condit in Sacramento County Superior Court.

“This was a sex-based quid pro quo relationship involving unwanted advances and sexual behavior, coupled with punishment and displays of power,” the lawsuit states.

Condit describes his horrific experience trying to save a professional relationship that was ruined by a “controlling” and “unpredictable” employer who engaged in “sexually dominant abuse of authority and power,” as described in NDTV.

The two met when Alvarado-Gil was running for Senate as a Democrat. She hired him to manage her campaign and named him her chief of staff after her election victory.

Condit claims the senator then began to “test” him, asking him if he would ever cheat on his wife and revealing personal information about their marriage, extramarital affairs and drug use, including taking gummy bears and ayahuasca.

Alvarado-Gil then allegedly treated her employee even more harshly, made open sexual advances to him and eventually forced him to have oral sex with her, the lawsuit says.

Condit stated that he had been having back problems since he allegedly last performed oral sex in a car.

In the lawsuit, he states that after visiting the doctor, he learned that he had three herniated discs in his back and a broken hip and therefore needed to undergo hip surgery.

According to the lawsuit, Condit “became dissatisfied with him” when he resisted her advances, but she persisted in making inappropriate comments to him – sometimes even in front of other employees.

Alvarado-Gil once texted her chief of staff to express her admiration for Republican Senator Roger Niello and his speech on the floor.

“If he were younger and I were single, I would date him,” she wrote, according to the report, which added that a screenshot was attached to the complaint.

Condit claims Alvarado-Gil forced the state Senate's personnel officer to reprimand him for opposing her treatment.

It is also said that she went to his house to accuse him of having an affair with his wife.

Condit mentioned in the lawsuit the role of Vanessa Bravo, chief of staff to Alvarado (now Gil).

Bravo was a childhood friend who hired the politician after she was elected. The lawsuit alleges that Bravo was “tolerant and supportive” of the harassment, discrimination and retaliation against Condit.

Condit claimed he received a notice of termination from the Senate in December.

Abuse of power

The lawsuit states that the senator once told Condit that she believed he would be more like his father, who was involved in extramarital affairs.

Alvarado-Gil allegedly used Condit for personal errands at the start of his employment in January 2023, including picking up and dropping off her children and dog.

“This growing control and exercise of power by ALVARADO-GIL caused [Condit] placed in an unequal and submissive position,” the lawsuit states.

Hostile environment, termination

In this case, Chad Condit accuses Alvarado-Gil and the California State Senate of discriminatory practices that violate the state's employment laws.

The lawsuit also names the House of Lords as a defendant, alleging that the body “blindly accepted” their retaliation by condoning the mistreatment of Alvarado-Gil.

Condit is seeking financial compensation for the claims as well as damages for emotional distress, lost earnings and reduced income potential.

Allegations rejected

Alvarado-Gil's lawyers have denied the allegations, calling them “false” and “financially motivated.”

Alvarado-Gil said in the video that sexual assault occurs every 73 seconds in America and that victims of all sexual orientations and genders are victims of these crimes.

“If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, please know that it is not your fault,” she said in the video, asking citizens to help “end sexual violence.”

On August 31, the Senate passed a bill that would increase penalties for sexual offenses and make the rape of an intoxicated person a serious crime.
