Three teens charged with burglary for allegedly stabbing student at West High School

Three teenagers have been arrested for allegedly beating and stabbing an Iowa City West High student at school after hours.

Tion Exum-Carson, 17, of Coralville, and Moayed Elsid, 16, and Nathaniel Washington, 16, of Iowa City, were each charged with first-degree burglary, a class B felony.

Teenagers were reportedly expelled from West High

The trio, who police say are not West High School students, are said to have entered Iowa City West High School around 8 p.m. on August 23 “after the school was closed to the public and they had no right to be there,” court documents say. Inside, the three youths are said to have chased a student through the hallways and beaten and stabbed him.

According to the police report, surveillance video shows Washington “holding a knife,” kicking and hitting the student, and then allegedly “stabbing him multiple times.”

Exum-Carson approached “with a large knife in his hand” and allegedly kicked, punched and stabbed the person.

Washington and Exum-Carson are barred from attending West High after being issued “indefinite trespass warnings” in January 2022, court documents show. The court did not specify whether Elsid is allowed on school grounds.

The injured student “suffered a cut on his left arm,” a police report said.

The stabbing occurred on the first day of school.

Iowa City CSD issues statement

The Iowa City Community School District told the Press-Citizen that it was aware of the stabbing, but did not elaborate on why two of the teens were denied access to school grounds.

“We continue to work with law enforcement as they complete their investigation,” the Iowa City Community School District said in a statement to the Press-Citizen.

A Johnson County District Court judge set bail for Elsid and Washington at $50,000 on Friday. Bail for Exum-Carson was set at $75,000 on Monday.
