Arizona man charged with alleged sexual assault of woman in Auburn Hills

An Arizona man who was in town for a work conference is accused of sexually harassing a woman at an Auburn Hills hotel.

Joel Delavara, 36, of Yuma, Arizona, was arraigned last week on charges of first- and second-degree sexual abuse and first-degree burglary.

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on August 14. Delavara allegedly copied the victim's hotel room key, gained access to her room and sexually assaulted her before flying back to Arizona.

They say the victim reported the attack to authorities and charges have been filed.

“The impact of rape on a victim and our community is tremendous,” said Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald. “This case is being handled by my office's Special Victims Unit, which is dedicated to prosecuting violent sex offenders and obtaining justice for victims. We will hold perpetrators accountable under the law.”

The suspect was held on bail of $100,000 with a 10% bond, which was posted.
