Costa Mesa man arrested for alleged knife attack on his partner

COSTA MESA, Calif. (September 9, 2024) – The Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) arrested a man yesterday for stabbing his partner to death in the apartment where they lived.

On September 8, 2024, before 8:00 p.m., the Communications Center received a call that a woman required medical attention. Costa Mesa Fire and Emergency Services and CMPD officers responded to the call. 500 block of Victoria Street.

When officers arrived, they found the 29-year-old Denise Avila had suffered multiple stab wounds. She died at the scene. The suspect, who was identified as the victim's partner, was observed fleeing the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived.

Officers immediately secured the crime scene and detectives went to the apartment to continue the investigation.

Hours later, the suspect Martin Laragarcia28, of Costa Mesa, returned to the apartment while police were still at the scene. He was arrested without incident and booked into jail. Investigators have recovered the weapon believed to have been used in this murder.
