Kwara Poly students give police 24-hour ultimatum over murder of student Abdulqoyyum Ishola

The Kwara State Polytechnic Students' Union government has given the police in the state a 24-hour ultimatum to meet its demands in connection with the tragic murder of one of its colleagues, Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, allegedly committed by a policeman in Ilorin last Wednesday.

“Otherwise, we may be left with no choice but to heed the pressure from the majority of our student members who have called for a peaceful, incessant and relentless protest in the fight for justice,” the Students’ Union government said at a press conference in Ilorin led by its President, Saheed Olalekan Ishola.

The student union also demanded the public identification of the police officers involved in the killing of the ND 2 student, stating: “We will not rest until our demands are met. We will not be intimidated. We will rise up and our voices will not only be heard, but must also be counted.”

According to the students, “The callousness and lack of empathy displayed by the Nigerian police force is a disgrace to say the least. We found that less than 24 hours after the unfortunate incident, police officers were spotted on the same route harassing and blackmailing innocent young people who were peacefully going about their daily lives. Their only crime was that they were students – young and good-looking.”

“More than 72 hours after our peaceful procession to the state police headquarters in Ilorin, which culminated in extensive discussions with senior police officers and government officials and included assurances that all stakeholders would work together to deliver timely justice and prevent future incidents, the police have yet to release any revelations about the officer responsible for the murder of our colleague.”

DAILY POST recalls that both the college management and the students’ union have demanded justice for the ND 2 student reportedly killed in the GRA area of Ilorin metropolis last Wednesday.

The state police commissioner, Victor Olaiya, had vowed to ensure justice is done in the matter.

He announced that the suspects and witnesses had been identified by state police officers as part of the ongoing investigation, with the aim of ensuring that the perpetrators face the full force of the law.
