A man has appeared in court accused of stabbing a mother to death. The mother was attacked at the Notting Hill Carnival in front of her three-year-old daughter.

Shakiel Thibou, 20, was charged with the murder of Cher Maximen after she died of “unsurvivable” injuries on August 31.

The court heard that the 32-year-old victim had been with relatives and friends at the Notting Hill Carnival family day on Sunday, August 25, when she was stabbed in the leg in broad daylight.

Thibou appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday via video link from Belmarsh Prison, while his brothers Sheldon Thibou, 24, and Shaeim Thibou, 21, appeared via video link from Wandsworth Prison to face lesser charges.

Prosecutor Alistair Richardson told the court that a fight had broken out near Ms Maximen and her group, in which the brothers were involved.

Shakiel attempted to stab a man near Ms Maximen with a “large machete-like knife,” the court heard.

The mother tried to intervene in the fight and was stabbed in the groin area, Richardson said.

She suffered cardiac arrest and was admitted to hospital where she underwent two major surgeries.

“In summary, she was found to have suffered significant injuries and severe blood loss,” said the prosecutor.

“These injuries proved insurmountable.”

Shakiel, from Hammersmith in west London, is also accused of possession of a knife in a public place and violent disorder.

Sheldon, from Hammersmith, and Shaeim, from Fulham in south-west London, are both charged with violent disorder and assault on an emergency medical worker. The former also faces charges of possession of a stun gun.

The three defendants were remanded in custody pending a plea and trial preparation hearing at the same court on 28 November.

The provisional trial date has been set for February 24 next year.
