The best series of 2024 is now also the most successful: Emmy record for “Shōgun” – even though not all the trophies have even been handed out yet! – Cinema news

“Shōgun” won 14 Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmys, which is more than any other series season has ever won. But that's not even the end of the line, because the most prestigious Emmys have yet to be awarded.

Effects

“Shōgun” won a total of 14 Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last weekend, setting a new record: 14 Emmys are the most trophies a series has ever won. And the Emmys ceremony is not even over yet (hence the “already now”), the awarding of the main prizes is yet to come. On September 15, 2024, “Shōgun” is nominated for eight further awards in six categories and can even get 20 Emmys for one season.

It is considered quite certain that “Shōgun” will win perhaps the most important Emmy for Best Drama Seriesbecause the competition is pretty weak this year. Last but not least, US broadcaster FX and those responsible for the series decided to extend “Shōgun”, which was originally conceived as a complete mini-series, very early on, thus enabling a change from the category Best Mini-Series to the category Best Drama Series.

But neither the Emmy rain nor the early extension are surprising, after all, “Shōgun” is probably the best series of 2024, if not of the last few years. Rotten Tomatoes has a sensational 99 percent positive reviews (with an average rating of 8.5 out of 10) and an only slightly worse audience score of 92 percent approval. It's similar on other film portals.

More Emmys for the actors?

Speaking of Emmy rain: Hiroyuki Sanada in the category Best Actor (Drama) and especially Anna-Lena Schröder in the category Best Actress (Drama) can have legitimate hopes of winning a trophy on September 15th. Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira Meanwhile, compete with each other for Best Supporting Actor (Drama). “Shōgun” is also nominated for two screenplay Emmys and one directing Emmy.

“Shōgun” won its first 14 Emmys for Best Guest Star (Néstor Carbonell), casting, costumes, make-up (in two categories), hairstyling, production design, editing, special effects, sound editing, sound mixing, camera work and stunts. It also won an Emmy for the opening credits sequence (as well as a making-of documentary).

In second place behind “Shōgun” is another series from US broadcaster FX: “The bearHas won seven Creative Arts Emmys so far and is nominated for a further nine Primetime Emmys in seven categories, including Best Comedy Series and the associated categories for Actor and Actress.
