Nursing – DAK: Staff shortage in nursing in MV will increase – Career

Schwerin (dpa/mv) – According to the results of a report, the shortage of nursing staff in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will worsen in the coming years. This is the result of a report by the health insurance company DAK. “We are facing a major challenge in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania when it comes to the need for nursing staff,” said DAK regional director Sabine Hansen, according to the statement.

Nursing staff who leave the company could only be replaced. It was said that it would not be possible to increase staff and structures in order to cushion the demographic change.

Many people in care will reach retirement age in the next few years

According to DAK, more than 25,000 people worked in nursing in the northeast last year. Around 5,400 of them will reach retirement age in the next ten years, or more than 20 percent.

The need is likely to be much greater given the continuously growing number of people in need of care, it said. “The staffing situation in nursing is alarming and will face further major challenges as baby boomers retire,” said Hansen.

The health insurance company also pointed out that the health burden on nursing staff was above average. According to its own information, DAK is the third largest health insurance company in Germany with around 5.5 million insured people, around 160,000 of whom are in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
