SP leader is accused of raping 18-year-old woman for a year and blackmailing her with video of the attack

A local leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh's Mau district has been accused of repeatedly raping an 18-year-old woman and threatening her with death, police reported on Sunday. According to news agency PTI, SHO of Kotwali Nagar police station in Mau, Anil Kumar Singh, said that the accused Virendra Pal, who is also a lawyer, had been raping the woman for nearly a year. Pal is currently on the run and efforts are on to arrest him.

The victim, who was assisting Pal in his legal work, alleged that he lured her into his car, drove to a remote area and gave her a cold drink laced with sedatives before raping her. He reportedly filmed the assault and used the footage to blackmail her, further sexually exploit her and extort Rs 400,000, he added.

The woman also claimed that Pal last attacked her in a hotel on July 16 and 17. When she confronted him on September 6 to get her vehicle back, he allegedly beat her, verbally abused her and threatened to kill her.

Following the woman's complaint, an FIR was filed against Pal on Saturday under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 115(2) (intentional causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 123 (assault with use of poison for the purpose of committing an offence) and 64(2)(m) (punishment for rape).

Former SP chairman accused of raping underage girl

Another incident came to light on August 12, when former block chief and reportedly close aide of SP leader Dimple Yadav during her tenure as Lok Sabha MP for Kannauj, Nawab Singh Yadav, was accused of raping a minor girl in Kannauj district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Kannauj Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Kumar Anand said, “The girl also confirmed the rape incident in her statement before the magistrate.” He further stated that after the medical examination confirmed the assault, additional charges under Section 64 (rape) of the BNS were filed against the accused, Nawab Singh Yadav told news agency PTI.
