Report: Russell Wilson tells the Steelers he can play, but the final decision is not his

Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson suffered a calf injury during practice this week, but unsurprisingly he wants to play.

Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Wilson “has informed the team that he can play.” However, “the team doctors have become more cautious.” A final decision will be made on Sunday.

This is consistent with our report from Friday evening that Wilson had a “chance” and that the final decision could be made during the pre-match warm-up.

The Steelers are happy with either Wilson or Justin Fields. As already explainedThe question is whether they feel more comfortable with Fields performing at 100 percent or with Wilson performing slightly less.

Whatever the case, Wilson's position must be ignored. He is on the verge of realising his own mortality in football, which can lead to a player making the wrong decision when trying to force his way to football's fountain of youth.

Given the tight competition, Fields would be the smartest move. If Fields plays well, it will be exciting. And Wilson will have even more reason to want to play.
