Soldier photos no longer available on military intranet to prevent deepfake crimes

Intranet photos of soldiers, military personnel and Defense Department officials are no longer available due to concerns they could be used to create sexually explicit deepfake images, officials said Sunday.

As of Thursday last week, such photos can no longer be removed from the military's intranet, the Onnara system, and the websites of military units, military officials said.

Only people with the appropriate authorization have access to such photos.

“There is a possibility that the photos could be misused for sex crimes, as individual photos can be accessed and downloaded,” said a Defense Ministry official. “It is not known whether the intranet photos were misused for deepfakes, but we have made them inaccessible to prevent that from happening.” (Yonhap)
