Madison police shoot armed man

Madison police said Saturday they fired shots after confronting a person with a gun downtown Friday night.

The incident began around 10:40 p.m. Friday when officers encountered a group of people in a parking lot in the 400 block of West Gilman Street, Lt. Michael Richardson said in a statement.

During contact with the group, officers located a person with a gun and Madison police fired shots, Richardson said.

No one was hit by gunfire, but one person not involved in the incident suffered minor injuries, likely from broken glass, Richardson said.

A weapon was seized, several people were arrested and one person was taken to the Dane County Jail, Richardson said.

No further information was released, and Richardson said the Dane County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation and will handle media inquiries related to the incident.
