Man (24) charged after stabbing outside cafe in Cork city centre – The Irish Times

A 24-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged in connection with an attack on an armed man outside a cafe in Cork city centre on Friday.

Aaron Bohane, a native of Ballincollig but currently of no fixed abode, has been charged with two offences in connection with the attack on Gavin Sheehan (38) at around 5pm on Friday.

Mr Bohane was charged with causing physical harm to Mr Sheehan on 6 September in Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork, in contravention of section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.

He was also charged with drawing a bladed weapon in the commission of an offence of assault occasioning bodily harm, contrary to section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990.

Giving evidence in relation to the arrest, charge and caution, Det Garda Joe Crowley, of Anglesea Street Garda Station, told the court that Mr Bohane did not respond to any of the charges following the caution.

Insp Clodagh O'Sullivan said gardaí had applied for custody and defence counsel Elaine Audley BL said her client had not made an application for bail at this time.

However, Mr Bohane reserves his position on whether to apply for bail and may make an application for bail at a later date, Ms Audley told the court.

Inspector O'Sullivan said the gardaí had requested remand until Wednesday and Judge Philip O'Leary had remanded Mr Bohane in custody to appear by videolink until September 11.

Ms Audley applied for free legal aid for her client, pointing out that he was currently unemployed and on welfare, whereupon Judge O'Leary granted him free legal aid.
