Man appears in court in Cork for assaulting Gavin Sheehan

A 24-year-old man appeared before Cork District Court charged with assaulting convicted offender Gavin Sheehan outside a cafe on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork city on Friday.

He told Judge Philip O'Leary he arrested Aaron Bohane, of St Vincent's Hostel in the city, at 9.40am on Saturday. He said Mr Bohane made no response when subsequently charged with two offences.

Mr Bohane was charged with assaulting Sheehan on 6 September in Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork city centre, in breach of Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.

He was also charged with carrying an article capable of causing serious injury – namely a knife – during the commission of an assault in Oliver Plunkett Street on 6 September. The alleged offence contravenes section 13 of the Firearms and Offences Act 1990.

Defence lawyer Elaine Audley said there was no application for bail at this time. However, Mr Bohane reserved his opinion on his bail application.

Since Mr Bohane is unemployed, he was granted free legal aid.

Judge O'Leary remanded Mr Bohane in custody to appear before Cork District Court via video link on Wednesday 11 September.

No direct evidence of the incident was presented. The alleged assault occurred outside a cafe at the junction of Oliver Plunkett Street and Grand Parade just after 5pm last Friday.

Sheehan was transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged from hospital.
