Paris honors Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei at the Paralympics

Paris honored Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei during the Paralympic Games Marathon events on Sunday, days after her tragic death in Kenya. Cheptegei died as a result of an attack by her boyfriend, who set her on fire. She had taken part in the marathon at the Paris Olympic Games and was 33 years old.
Cheptegei's picture was shown on a giant screen on the Esplanade des Invalides, while spectators paid their last respects with applause. The sportsman's death has raised concerns about the increasing violence against Female athletesespecially in Kenya.
Kenyan and Ugandan media reported that Cheptegei suffered burns to over 75% of her body. According to the Reuters report, she is the third high-profile athlete to be killed in Kenya since 2021.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced: “The city will name a sports facility after Cheptegei as a lasting tribute to her legacy.”
The tributes and memorial plans reflect the impact Cheptegei had on her sport and highlight the pressing issues surrounding violence against female athletes.
