Project for gas-fired Tuatua crematorium launched in Labasa

Construction of the Tuatua gas-fired crematorium project began this morning following a foundation stone laying ceremony in Labasa and is expected to be completed within 16 weeks.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industries Charan Jeath Singh said the people of the Northern Division had been deprived of a good opportunity to bid farewell to their loved ones.

Singh says it is because of the coalition government's commitment to inclusivity and environmental sustainability, as well as the recognition and appreciation of Fiji's ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.

He says that visits to cemeteries are usually a serious matter, but today's occasion serves to mark a new beginning.

The minister says that once completed, the new facility will have a gas-fired crematorium and adequate seating for mourners, and that several projects are planned in Lautoka, Ba and Navua.

He also says that 4K Construction has been selected to renovate the crematorium in Tuatua and Weseng Consulting Limited has been entrusted with the environmental management plan as required by the Ministry of Environment.

Singh further said that the ministry is planning to set up a ‘ghaat’ facility in Labasa where families can offer a final prayer to their deceased loved ones.
