Killed Silviu back in Romania

Bochum. In July, an attack at Bochum Central Station resulted in the death of a homeless man. Five women did everything they could to bring him to his family.

Silviu Munteanu actually had big plans when he came to Germany, but instead he died of his injuries at the end of July after an attack at Bochum Central Station. The 38-year-old Romanian wanted to find a job here and thus provide a better life for himself and his family. While a good friend of his got a job at the fair, the 38-year-old came away empty-handed.

Instead of finding a job, Munteanu became homeless. The Romanian sought shelter in Bochum Central Station, among other places – again on the day at the end of July when a 21-year-old man from Lünen is said to have attacked him in his sleep, causing him to die from his injuries.

With their local initiative “Help from the Trunk”, five women from Bochum are now ensuring that the Romanian's body is returned to his hometown of Bârlad, where he can be buried by Munteanu's family and in accordance with his religion. To this end, the women have launched an appeal for donations following the tragedy, which they are sharing with their friends.

Cousin of the killed homeless man asked Bochum women for help

The women say they regularly volunteer to help the homeless in their private lives. They talk to them, ask what they need, and provide them with food, clothing and hygiene products. That's why they were able to rescue the victim from the main train station. His cousin Mihai Raducanu, Munteanu's only relative in Bochum, approached them after his death and asked for help. “At first I thought we wouldn't be able to do it,” he says.

“His mother has incredibly little money at her disposal,” explains Angela Füllbeck, who played a key role in organizing the fundraising campaign within the “Help in the Trunk” group. That is why the women were keen to support her. If they had not done so, the mother would not have had the financial means to bring her son back home and have him buried there. That would have been particularly bad for the mother and other relatives for religious reasons, says Füllbeck. If the body had remained in Germany, it would certainly have been cremated, she says. For the family, however, that was a particularly terrible idea. They belonged to an Orthodox Christian community. “According to their beliefs, he would then have gone to hell.” Munteanu's cousin also confirms this: “It was very important to my family that he was not cremated and that he was buried at home.”

The Bochum Confirmation Institute supported the campaign

“We would like to use the donations to pay for the transfer by a Bochum funeral home directly,” the group explained in their appeal. Within a very short time, a total of 2,000 euros were raised, then they deactivated the donation function, explains Füllbeck. The service fee was deducted from the donations, she explains. They used the rest to pay the Bochum funeral home Fritz and the Romanian funeral home “BorealisVest”.

“Fritz in particular was extremely accommodating,” reports Füllbeck. The company kept the body until it was transported to Romania and supported the group with the necessary administrative procedures, and even waived a large part of its usual fees afterwards. BorealisVest finally transported the deceased Munteanu to Romania. Munteanu's mother financed the funeral in Bârlad with the help of donations collected locally.

Mihai Raducanu is certain that his family would not have managed it without the help of Andrea Füllbeck and the “Help from the Trunk” team. Füllbeck was also a great support to the family emotionally. The whole family thanks her from the bottom of their hearts.

Overall, the costs were significantly lower than expected, says Füllbeck. The women transferred the portion of the donations that “Help from the Trunk” did not need to organize Munteanu’s transport to Romania to the deceased’s children.
