Daughter of man accused of raping his wife reveals her own fears

The daughter of a French woman who was allegedly repeatedly drugged and sexually abused by her husband and dozens of other men admitted on Friday that she too is afraid of becoming a victim.

Caroline Darian, 45, testified against her father Dominique Pélicot (71) in a court in Avignon and stated that she believed that she, like her mother Gisèle, had been drugged and possibly raped.

Among the thousands of photos and videos that Pélicot said he kept of his wife's abuse, officers also discovered two photos of an unidentified unconscious woman. “I immediately realized that I was drugged in this photo,” Darian said in court.

According to her statement, the photos with Darian were captioned “daughter of the bitch.” She described the vulgar remark as “beyond inaudible vulgarity” and said, “The caption sucks.”

Although prosecutors have not charged Pélicot with drugging or sexually abusing his daughter, Darian says she suspects she was also raped, an allegation her father denies. However, Pélicot is accused of invading the privacy of Darian and her two stepsisters by “taking, recording or transmitting” a sexual image of her without her consent.

“How can a person like me heal and hope to have a normal life as a woman and a normal sex life?” Darian asked the court. “How can you rebuild yourself from the ashes when you know that your father is undoubtedly the worst sex offender of the last 20 years?”

Darian's mother, who took the stand on Thursday, waived her right to anonymity and chose to make the trial, which involves around 51 men, public.

“I speak for all women who are on drugs and don't know it. I do it on behalf of all women who may never know,” said Gisèle. “So that no more women have to suffer.”

If Pélicot is found guilty of rape, he faces 50 years in prison.
