Man arrested in connection with stabbing outside Cork cafe – The Irish Times

Gardaí have arrested a 23-year-old man for questioning in connection with an attack in which a man was stabbed by two assailants as he drank coffee outside a cafe in Cork city centre on Friday afternoon.

Detectives arrested the suspect in Cork city centre on Saturday morning and questioned him about the attack which left a man with serious injuries after he was attacked outside a cafe at the junction of Grand Parade and Oliver Plunkett Street at 5pm on Friday.

The suspect, originally from the Ballincollig area, was taken to Bridewell Garda Station where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows the Garda to detain suspects for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí continue to search for a second suspect in the stabbing and have begun examining CCTV footage from the Grand Parade and Oliver Plunkett Street areas to identify the attacker, who was not wearing a mask.

The victim of the attack, a 37-year-old man from the Shanakiel area of ​​Cork city, remains in a stable condition at Cork University Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a cut on his back and another wound on his face.

The man has more than 70 previous convictions and was only released from prison last month after serving an 11-year sentence for a shooting.
