Airlines pull out of Israel as Iranian proxy terror groups attack

A new report from the pro-Iranian media outlet al-Mayadeen says that commercial airlines are canceling flights to Israel due to Iranian threats against Israel. This is common knowledge, but the fact that Al-Mayadeen is now bringing this issue to the forefront shows that it may be a new war aim of Iran's proxies and Iran in general.

After Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023, flights to Israel were canceled. Later, when Iran threatened Israel in July 2024, airlines canceled flights in August. Al-Mayadeen's report says that some airlines may continue to cancel their flights until March 2024. This shows that these pro-Iranian media are communicating this as a war aim towards Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies.

The airspace over Israel is safe, so where are the flights?

In April, Iran attacked Israel with ballistic missiles. It is unclear why the recent threats against Israel have led to long-term flight cancellations. Israeli airspace is safe and Israel has one of the most advanced air defense systems in the world.

The arbitrary cancellations received greater attention in the Western media and even among US politicians.

The al-Mayadeen report states that “in the hours following this announcement, airline travelers received notices of flight cancellations to more than 15 destinations in Europe until further notice.” The report is based on a report in the Israeli media.

“Other airlines such as EasyJet, one of the world's largest low-cost carriers, and China's Cathay Pacific, one of the world's largest, have followed suit, announcing that they will 'completely cancel their flights by March 2025.'”

The report continued: “Other companies have also announced the cancellation of all flights to and from Israel until the end of October, including Air India, the only foreign airline operating flights to the East, as well as Air Canada, American Airlines, Spanish Airlines, Finnair, KLM and Korean Air. Last month, American airline Delta announced it would 'extend the cancellation of its flights to Israel from September 1 to September 30.'”

It is clear that Iran's proxies are now turning their attention to this development, viewing it as a potential victory in the conflict of the past eleven months.
