Joliet police investigate 6-year-old boy who stabbed and killed 2-year-old brother with kitchen knife; DCFS notified

JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) – Joliet police said they were investigating after a 6-year-old boy stabbed his 2-year-old brother to death Friday night.

Police said they were called to a home in the 2700 block of Fairway Drive shortly after 5 p.m. for a report of a child being stabbed. When they arrived, they found a 2-year-old boy who had been stabbed multiple times.

Their preliminary investigation revealed that the toddler had been stabbed to death with a kitchen knife by his six-year-old brother, police said.

The toddler was taken to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, the boys' mother was in the house at the time of the stabbing, but not in the living room where the crime occurred.

Police said they called police after finding the two-year-old.

Police said the children's family is cooperating with the investigation. The Ministry of Children and Families has also been notified and is cooperating with police.

Police said their department had had contact with the family in the past, but did not provide any information about what type of contact it was or who was involved.

Further information, including details about the circumstances of the stabbing, was not immediately available.

The victim has not yet been identified.

Police say they will release more information as it becomes available.
