Kerala man accuses Malayalam director Ranjith of sexual abuse; says 'He asked me to take off my clothes'

Twelve years after the horrific event, he has now filed a complaint with the police.

MUMBAI: A man who wishes to remain anonymous has come forward to accuse Mollywood director Ranjith of sexual abuse following the revelations of the Hema Committee report that caused much anger in the Malayalam film industry. He has now also filed a police complaint 12 years after the horrific incident.

The victim, from Kozhikode in Kerala, reportedly told the police that Ranjith sexually assaulted him in a five-star hotel in Bengaluru in 2012, according to a report by Onmanorama. He claimed that Ranjith gave him his phone number by writing it on a piece of tissue paper after seeing him during the shooting of Bavuttiyude Namathil with Mammootty.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I met him in a five-star hotel in Bengaluru. He asked me to undress because he wanted to see how I looked. He said my eyes were beautiful and asked me to do my eyebrows. What he did to me, I cannot say today.”

The man, who initially aspired to act in films, gave up after this disturbing incident, while Ranjith too later avoided him.

For those who don't know, Ranjith was one of the first names to crop up in the Malayalam #MeToo controversy after Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra filed a police complaint alleging that he had touched her inappropriately.

After the allegation came to light, Ranjith resigned as chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy on August 25.

Superstar Mohanlal and the entire board of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) resigned on Tuesday, August 27, in response to several women accusing Malayalam actors and filmmakers of sexual assault at the workplace.

A new committee has been established to further investigate the findings of the Hema report.
