Long Island man who stabbed his girlfriend with scissors near three children sentenced to 15 years in prison

A Long Island man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for stabbing his girlfriend in the neck in front of three children, authorities announced Thursday.

Jorge Guevara, 49, of Bay Shore, was found guilty in June of first-degree assault and related charges in connection with the stabbing attack on his then-girlfriend during a domestic dispute on March 28, 2023, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in a news release.

Officials said the woman had come home from work when the two began arguing. Guevara then threatened the victim with a knife.

While the two were wrestling over the knife, Guevara grabbed a pair of scissors from a nearby desk and stabbed the victim “multiple times in the neck and shoulder,” according to prosecutors.

Tierney said three “minor children” were present during the attack. He did not provide any information about the children's ages or their relationship to the woman or Guevara.

After the stabbing, Guevara did not allow the victim or any of the children to call 911, officials said.

A neighbor who heard the woman screaming for help went into the house to help her, but Guevara did not allow her to call 911. When the neighbor tried to leave the house, she could not open the door and was forced to jump out the window.

Only then could the neighbor call the police.

The victim was eventually taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for a “deep laceration to the neck,” authorities said.

A Suffolk County jury found Guevara guilty on all counts on June 19, 2024. On Wednesday, Acting Superior Court Judge Steven Pilewski sentenced him to 15 years in prison, followed by five years of probation upon release.

“This case represents a horrific act of domestic violence that will leave lasting scars on everyone involved,” Tierney said in a statement Thursday.

“We cannot even begin to imagine the horror these children have experienced or the betrayal and pain the victim has suffered at the hands of someone who should have been her protector,” he added. “We hope this outcome helps the family on their path to healing and recovery.”
