Knife attack in Sarstedt: Suspect sued against deportation | NDR.de – News – Lower Saxony

The 35-year-old, who is alleged to have killed a 61-year-old in Sarstedt (Hildesheim district), has apparently been tolerated in Germany for two years. This was announced by the Interior Ministry.

According to the information, the man should have been deported to Iraq a long time ago. However, he filed a complaint against his deportation in the administrative court. The Iraqi will later be tolerated in Germany, according to the Interior Ministry.

Asylum application rejected in Poland and Germany

The man had applied for asylum for the first time in February 2017. Since he had entered the country via Poland, he was sent back to Poland in August 2017 after the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) had rejected his asylum application. He then returned to Germany in 2022 – the BAMF rejected his asylum application again. The man filed a complaint against the threatened deportation and has been tolerated since then, according to the ministry. Initially, the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” (HAZ) reported on this. According to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice, the processing of asylum applications took an average of more than 28 months in 2022, and just under 18 months in the first half of 2024.

Operator of a refugee shelter killed

The 35-year-old has been in custody since Tuesday. He is alleged to have stabbed the operator of a refugee accommodation in Sarstedt with a knife after an argument. The suspect lived in the accommodation himself. So far he has remained silent on the allegations. The police and public prosecutor's office are investigating manslaughter.
