“Her dream was to heal as many people as possible”: Mother of a doctor from Calcutta writes emotional letter | Nation

PTC Web Desk: In a deeply emotional open letter, the mother of the Kolkata doctor-educator who was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has described her daughter's lifelong dream of becoming a doctor – not for financial gain, but to heal as many people as possible. In the letter, written on Teachers' Day, she expressed her deep gratitude to the teachers who helped her daughter realise this dream.

“I am the mother of the deceased… Today, on Teachers' Day, I pay tribute to all teachers on behalf of my daughter. Since childhood, it was her dream to become a doctor and you were the inspiration behind this dream,” the letter said, India Today reported.

The mother recounted her daughter's deep determination to pursue a medical career. She explained that her family supported her unwaveringly, but it was the guidance and encouragement of her teachers that helped her daughter achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. “Thanks to great teachers like you, she was able to become the person she always dreamed of being,” the grieving mother wrote.

In the letter, she recalled a poignant conversation in which her daughter revealed her true motivation to become a doctor: “My daughter always said, 'Mom, I don't need money. I just want to get a lot of degrees and help as many patients as possible.'”

The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, sparking nationwide outrage. Doctors across the country went on strike, demanding better workplace safety and justice for the murdered doctor.

Sanjay Roy, a volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested a day after the murder, but the case has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In her letter, the mother described the horrific day of the attack and recounted how her daughter had spent the entire day treating patients and fulfilling the role she had always dreamed of. “Even that day, when she left home, she cared for many patients in the hospital. But her dreams were brutally snuffed out. Her goal of winning a gold medal in MD, which she had planned to achieve that very evening, was dashed,” she lamented.

The mother also alleged that the hospital management took steps to cover up the crime and destroy crucial evidence. “Even after this horrific incident, the hospital management and administration took steps to destroy all the evidence,” she claimed. A diary found near the body revealed the doctor's ambitions to win a gold medal and other prestigious awards in her medical career.

In a plea for justice, the grieving mother called on medical staff, teachers and hospital personnel to disclose any information they may have about the crime. “As her mother, I respectfully request all medical teachers, doctors, health authorities and caregivers to disclose any information or evidence regarding the incident. The silence of good people only strengthens the criminals,” she wrote.
