Driver in British Columbia fined for hitting mother and baby on zebra crossing

A 24-year-old driver received a ticket for careless driving after hitting a mother and her baby at a pedestrian crossing near Victoria.

According to police, the collision occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday in a roundabout at the intersection of Peatt Road and Brock Avenue in Langford.

Investigators determined the mother was pushing her 11-month-old child in a stroller when they were struck by a Nissan Pathfinder SUV, West Shore Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement Thursday.

“The SUV traveled at a high rate of speed around the roundabout before turning right onto Brock Avenue, where the 25-year-old mother and her child crossed the street while the pedestrian light was flashing,” the statement said.

Mother and child were taken to hospital. Police said the child appeared distraught but did not suffer serious injuries. The mother was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

“It is remarkable and extremely fortunate that mother and child were able to escape the scene of a collision such as this without life-threatening injuries,” Cpl. Mike Jacobson said in the statement.

“We would like to thank all witnesses who immediately called 911 and remained on scene.”

Police issued the driver a ticket and the owner of the Nissan was told the vehicle would be towed and subjected to a mechanical inspection, the RCMP said.
