Former Albany Airport CEO Phil Calderone was fired while hospitalized.

As NewsChannel 13 reported Wednesday, the airport authority voted to fire Calderone, just weeks after the board decided not to renew his contract, which expires in December.

The Times Union reported that Calderone had been in the intensive care unit at St. Peter's Hospital since Monday, apparently due to symptoms of severe stress.

The board released the following statement on Thursday morning:

“The Albany County Airport Authority Board was not notified, either formally or informally, of Mr. Calderone's absence. And even on Tuesday, the evening before the meeting, there were indications that Mr. Calderone might attend Wednesday's meeting. Authority staff had placed his name tag on the table as they prepared the room for Wednesday's special board meeting. We later found out that Authority staff knew about Mr. Calderone's condition as early as Monday and decided not to inform the Board or other relevant staff until after the Board contacted Mr. Calderone at approximately 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday.”
