Correctional officer stabbed to death at Kent Institution in Agassiz

Correctional officer stabbed to death at Kent Institution in Agassiz

A correctional officer at Kent Institution is recovering from a knife wound sustained during an incident at the maximum security facility in the Agassiz area on Sunday, September 1.

John Randle, regional president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, said the officer was breaking up a fight when he was stabbed; he was providing medical aid to a victim at the time of the incident.

Agassiz RCMP spokesman Sergeant Andy Lot said the incident is under investigation and, as with all attacks on a correctional officer, charges are recommended against the suspect. Lot said the officer was hospitalized after suffering a stab wound to the arm and has since been released.

“He is expected to make a full recovery,” said Lot The observer.

Since the weapon had recently been used in an attack on an inmate when the officer was stabbed, Randle confirmed that the officer was taking the “cocktail,” a medical treatment used when someone comes into contact with potentially contaminated items.

The Observer has reached out to Correctional Service Canada for comment.
