Missing couple has accident – son and mother die in hospital

The search for a missing mother and her son ended on hartseer note after the family learned that she had been involved in a car accident.

83-year-old Doris Ring and her son Brian disappeared last week.

Daughter Allison “Ally” Ring said she received news Tuesday morning that her mother and twin brother were involved in an accident in the Diep River area last week.

She says Doris was admitted to Groote Schuur Hospital with broken ribs, while 57-year-old Brian was taken to Victoria Hospital, where he later died.

On the day of their disappearance, the two were last seen walking in the Wynberg area.

Ally said Brian, who suffered from a mental illness, and Doris, who has dementia, would often go for walks together but return home the same day.

However, on August 26, they took a walk that would end their journey together.

A tearful Ally says the tragic news gave her peace of mind but also broke her heart because she had hoped to find her family members alive.

“I got a call that my mother was in intensive care and that a body matching Brian's description needed to be identified. At first I didn't want to believe it was him, but then it was him and it hurts,” she tells the Daily Voice.

“My mother is fine in the hospital, but she broke her ribs. She doesn't know anything about Brian yet.”

Ally, who recently moved back to her family's home in Parkwood to care for the two, says her mother still viewed Brian as her little boy and feared being separated from him.

“I think that's why they ran away, because I told her we had an appointment with a social worker so she could be properly cared for while Brian was institutionalized. Now he's no longer here and they're separated anyway.”

In a video circulating on social media, reportedly taken shortly before the accident, the smiling mother and her son are seen walking when a motorist stops Brian, a die-hard Man United fan, and mocks him by shouting “Liverpool”.

Brian defends his favorite football team and laughs before walking away.

Ally thanked everyone who helped with the search and is now asking for assistance with Brian's funeral as he did not have funeral insurance.
