Kuini Nga wai hono i te po was named the new Māori queen, and Kiingi Tuheitia was buried

The youngest child and only daughter of King Tuheitia was named the eighth Māori monarch at a ceremony at Tuurangawaewae Marae.

Tekau-maa-rua, the advisory council of Kiingitanga, elected 27-year-old Kuini Nga wai hono i te po as her father's successor.

Thousands of mourners are in Ngaaruawaahia to attend the funeral of Māori King Tuheitia and the appointment of his successor.

The leader of the Kiingitanga movement, Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, died on Friday at the age of 69 after heart surgery.

The official ceremony to announce the king's successor began at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral service for Kiingi Tuheitia.
