Polls: Harris and Trump are neck and neck in six key US swing states as presidential election approaches

US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are neck and neck in key swing states in the 2024 presidential election, according to the latest polls released by CNN on Wednesday.

As both candidates make a final push to get Americans to vote in the November 5 election, Harris and Trump are focused on the six crucial swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, Harris leads Trump by 50% to 44%, and in Michigan, she leads with 48% to Trump's 43%.

In Arizona, Trump has a lead among likely voters with 49 percent of the vote, while Harris has 44 percent.

In the other three swing states, however, the numbers are undecided.

In Georgia and Nevada, Harris has a very narrow lead over Trump. The vice president received 48 percent of the vote, Trump 47 percent. In Pennsylvania, the two candidates are tied at 47 percent.

In addition, nearly 15 percent of likely voters said they had not yet decided on a candidate. This means that nine weeks before Election Day, all six swing states are literally still up for grabs.

The polls were conducted after the Democratic Party convention in Chicago and the results suggest that the path to victory for the candidates leads through Pennsylvania and Georgia.

According to the polling data, 16 percent of voters in Pennsylvania said they had not yet decided on a candidate or would change their mind on Election Day. In Georgia, the figure is 12 percent, meaning that both states are neck and neck despite the high number of undecided voters.

However, if the 2020 elections are to serve as a blueprint for entering the White House, it is almost imperative for both candidates to win all six swing states.

President Joe Biden defeated Trump in the last election by overwhelmingly winning the six swing states. Biden reinforced the philosophy that every vote counts by narrowly beating Trump in Georgia by just under 12,000 votes and winning Arizona by just over 10,000 votes.

The key to victory for Harris, according to CNN, would be to keep Biden's 2020 victories outside the six swing states, win Wisconsin and Michigan, win Pennsylvania and win a single electoral vote anywhere else.

On the other hand, if Trump wins in Georgia and Pennsylvania and is also victorious in North Carolina – a state he won in 2020 but which is now considered a swing state in 2024 – the former president would have enough electoral votes to reclaim the White House for a second term, regardless of what happens in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin.

As Harris and Trump campaign in the crucial swing states, they must address the issues that matter most to Americans.

According to polls, 39 percent of voters said the economy was their most important issue, while 25 percent said protecting democracy was the next most important issue. Abortion and immigration are other key issues voters want candidates to address.
