Court of Cassation confirms 7-year prison sentence in case of sexual assault of a minor

Date

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN – The Court of Cassation upheld a criminal court's May 2023 ruling and sentenced a man to seven years in prison after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a teenager in Amman in May 2022.

The court found the defendant guilty of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy on May 22.

The court imposed the maximum sentence on the defendant.

According to court documents, the victim went to the building where the defendant lived to run some errands for his father.

“The accused lured the victim to his home where he sexually abused her,” the court added.

According to court documents, the victim returned to his family's home and informed them about the sexual encounter with the defendant.

The victim's family took their son to the Family Protection Agency, where they filed a complaint against the accused, the court said.

In its ruling, the court stated that it relied on DNA evidence from the victim, which matched that of the defendant, in its conviction.

The defendant challenged the verdict through his lawyer, claiming he was innocent.

The defendant claimed that the court had relied on contradictory investigative procedures.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General of the Criminal Court asked the High Court to uphold the verdict.

The Supreme Court ruled that the criminal proceedings had been correct and that the defendant had received the appropriate punishment.

“The defendant confessed to the incident of sexual assault upon his arrest and the DNA evidence supports the prosecution’s case,” the higher court ruled.

Therefore, he deserved the punishment he received, the higher court added.

The Court of Cassation was presided over by Judge Mahmoud Ebtoush and comprised judges Rizeq Abul Fool, Fawzy Nahar, Majid Rafaya and Qassem Dughmi.
