Brian Stelter returns to CNN in new role after being fired two years ago

Former Reliable sources Anchor Brian Stelter will return to CNN after being fired two years ago under the network's previous leadership and then-CEO Chris Licht.

“I'm very pleased to announce that I'm returning as lead writer of CNN's Reliable Sources newsletter, the digest I founded in 2015,” Stelter said in his newsletter Tuesday. “I'm returning to CNN in a brand new role as Chief Media Analyst, which means I'll be appearing on air, developing digital content and leading that newsletter.”

The media analyst admitted in his newsletter that he has “changed a lot” since leaving the network. He said he has gone from a Manhattan lifestyle to living on a horse farm. He has discovered what news means to the “ordinary consumer” and is excited to share his new insights with others.

Before leaving, Stelter had spent his time at CNN attacking alleged “disinformation” from Fox News and the Republicans while setting an anti-Republican tone in his editorials.

In 2017, Stelter told Kellyanne Conway, then-counselor to President Donald Trump, that parts of the dossier of former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele had been “verified” and discussed the dossier's legitimacy with her.

The Steele dossier contained numerous allegations and conspiracies about links between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. The report was funded by Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee. In 2019, Robert Mueller's investigation concluded that no criminal conspiracy between Moscow and the Trump campaign could be established. In 2021, the Justice Department charged Igor Danchenko, a Russian analyst who worked on a dossier, with lying to the FBI after making unproven claims linking Trump to the Kremlin.

In 2020, Stelter questioned whether television networks should choose to turn away from coverage of the 2020 Republican National Convention to avoid feeding viewers “disinformation.”

Stelter portrayed the October 2020 story of the emails from Hunter Biden's laptop as a constructed anti-Biden narrative and pushed the possibility that it was part of a Russian disinformation campaign.

The television presenter also encouraged porn star Stormy Daniels' lawyer, Michael Avenatti, to run for president against Trump.

“I don’t know if it’s a good thing that you need star power and TV experience for this job, but I think it’s good… and looking ahead to 2020, that’s one reason why I’m hiring you as [presidential] “The reason I won is your presence on cable news,” Stelter told Avenatti live.

Stelter has admitted that his comments have led to ridicule in the “Fox Universe,” as he has been called “Humpty Dumpty” and nicknamed “Spud,” comparing him to a human potato.

Stelter was an ally of Licht's predecessor, Jeff Zucker, who had pushed the news organization to take an anti-Trump stance. Licht resigned in 2023.
