Village in Saskatchewan loses several landmarks in fire

A small village in Saskatchewan lost several important landmarks in a fire earlier this week.

The former hotel, post office and town hall in Wiseton, Saskatchewan, went up in flames on Tuesday, according to a Facebook post by a local who shared photos of the burning hotel and a nearby building.

“I feel pretty sorry for my hometown of Wiseton,” Dave Westbury said in the post.

“Even though the hotel has been closed for a while, we all have many fond memories there. It's never easy to see a part of history being destroyed.”

The Town of Wiseton has not released any information about how the fire started before it destroyed the two buildings, but has said the township is under a boil water advisory until further notice.

Postal services were moved to the nearby community of Dinsmore.

Westbury said he was grateful the winds weren't stronger, as they could have pushed the fire to the nearby home of his parents and brother.

“A big thank you goes to all the fire brigades involved and all the farmers who brought water to the city.

Wiseton, which had a population of 79 at the 2016 census, is located about 150 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon.
