Suspect killed after fight with police over gun in DC

Washington, DC – A fatal police-involved shooting occurred in southeast Washington early Sunday morning, sparking an investigation by the agency’s internal affairs office.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on September 1 in the 2500 block of Marion Barry Avenue Southeast, where officers responded to a report of a car crash. When they arrived, they found a vehicle that had collided with a commercial building, causing minor damage. Inside, the driver, identified as 26-year-old Justin Robinson of Southeast DC, was unresponsive and a firearm was visible.

When additional officers arrived, Robinson entered the vehicle. Officers noticed that he was armed and ordered him to drop the weapon.

As the officers approached the vehicle with their service weapons drawn, Robinson allegedly grabbed one of the officer's weapons. In response, two officers fired their weapons, hitting Robinson. Despite immediate action by the fire department and emergency services, Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Robinson's weapon was confiscated and the officers involved were placed on leave per department policy.

Body-worn camera footage of the incident is being released as required by law. The shooting is currently under investigation by the MPD's Internal Affairs Division's Force Investigations Team. An independent review is being conducted by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
