Essex Police recently deployed facial recognition, resulting in 5 arrests

Corsight AI's technology was chosen for its high reliability under real-world difficult conditions such as poor video quality, limited camera angles and camouflage

Essex Police's use of new live facial recognition technology led to further arrests at the Clacton Airshow on August 22 and two arrests in Southend on August 25 and 26, including for sexual assault and grievous bodily harm. The technology, provided by Corsight AI and Digital Barriers, identified people wanted for serious crimes, executed orders against people on a 'watchlist' and protected vulnerable people at risk of harm. Images of people not on the watchlist were quickly deleted immediately, meaning no data needed to be saved or stored.

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Pritchard said: “We are an innovative and forward-thinking force, using new technology to keep people safe and prevent crime. Our live facial recognition technology is used to locate people we want to speak to in connection with ongoing investigations, and to manage people with court orders or conditions. Criminals cannot believe they can walk around our communities without being caught.

The technology, developed in collaboration between Digital Barriers and Corsight AI, enables Essex Police to recognise faces in real time and during post-trial investigations.

Digital Barriers, known for its proven AI-based video codec and secure edge platform, specializes in delivering live cellular video solutions including military operations in Afghanistan, securing royal and presidential events, and the Olympic Games.

Neil Hendry, Defence Government Director at Digital Barriers, said: “Real-time facial recognition from security cameras, vehicle cameras and body cameras is a challenge that very few technologies can reliably address. Digital Barriers provides a reliable video stream and Corsight AI was chosen due to its high reliability in difficult conditions such as poor video quality, limited camera angles, darkness, extreme weather and disguises.”

Tony Porter, Chief Privacy Officer of Corsight AI and former UK Surveillance Camera Commissioner, added: “Based on our extensive experience with law enforcement agencies around the world, Essex Police adheres to the highest standards of fair use and transparency.”

Rob Watts, President of Corsight AI, said: “It is a privilege for Corsight AI to contribute to the safety of the law-abiding people of Essex.”
