Russian attack on Ukrainian military center leaves 47 dead and over 206 injured – Nehanda Radio

At least 47 people were killed and more than 206 injured in a Russian attack on a military training center in the heart of the Ukrainian capital Poltava on Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed.

In a video message, the Ukrainian president mentioned that initial reports indicated that two ballistic missiles were used in the attack.

“One of the buildings of the Poltava Military Institute of Communications was partially destroyed, many people were buried under rubble. Fortunately, many were rescued,” Zelensky said in a video shared on his Telegram account.

“All necessary support is being provided for the rescue operations,” he continued. The second building hit was reportedly a medical facility.

The attack sparked a storm of outrage on Ukrainian social media following unconfirmed claims that the attack was directed against a military gathering or appeal, with many criticising authorities for allowing the event to take place despite the looming threat of Russian aggression.

Although Zelensky acknowledged responsibility towards Russia, he stressed that the incident must be thoroughly investigated.

Poltava Mayor Philip Pronin said his office could not provide further details about the attack for security reasons.

“The enemy uses every opportunity to inflict further suffering and confusion on the Ukrainian people. It is crucial to rely on trustworthy sources,” he warned.

Maria Bezugla, a member of parliament known for her criticism of the military leadership, accused senior officials of putting soldiers in danger by allowing such gatherings.

“Such incidents are becoming more and more frequent. When will this finally end?” she asked on Telegram.
