Valencia's Rafa Mir arrested for alleged sexual assault

Valencia striker Rafa Mir has been arrested by Spain's Guardia Civil on suspicion of sexual assault, the club said on Tuesday.

A Guardia Civil spokesman confirmed that a LaLiga player had been arrested in Valencia for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, but did not reveal his name.

Valencia said in a statement that they were aware of the arrest and would cooperate with the judiciary. Representatives of Mir were not immediately available for comment.

The news was first reported by radio station Cadena Ser, which said another person suspected of being involved in the attack had also been arrested.

Sources familiar with the investigation told EFE that a 25-year-old woman filed a complaint against Mir on Monday following an incident at the footballer's house.

The woman claims that she and her 21-year-old friend were sexually abused in the apartment by Mir and another man.

EFE reported that the women were hospitalized following the alleged attack and that police have so far arrested only Mir, while the search for the second man is still ongoing.

Mir, 27, joined Valencia on loan from Sevilla this summer and has appeared in all four of the club's La Liga matches so far this season.

The former Spanish U21 international began his professional career at Valencia before playing for Wolves, Las Palmas, Nottingham Forest, Huesca and Sevilla before returning.
