Shockwaves spread yesterday after three brothers were killed in a road accident on Monday morning, bringing the number of road deaths this year to 53, a significant increase on last year.

Philip McCarron Christie, 24, Philip D'Caprio Christie, 23, and D'Angelo Christie, 20, were killed in a collision shortly after 2 a.m. Monday.

According to police, the driver of a metallic gray Honda Passport traveling north on Sir Milo Butler Highway lost control and crashed into a tree. The 24-year-old driver and 23-year-old passenger were trapped in the vehicle.

The fire department used rescue shears to free her, but rescue personnel confirmed her death on the scene. The passenger in the back seat was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

The tragic deaths of the Christie brothers sparked national shock, with condolences and expressions of shock pouring out on social media. Transportation Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis pointed out that over 60 percent of traffic fatalities this year were men, most of them under the age of 46. She also stressed that 77 percent of fatal accidents occurred between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m., particularly on Sundays and Mondays.

In another incident on Sunday, a male motorcyclist was killed at the intersection of Prince Charles Drive and College Gardens Road. A white Chevrolet Equinox driven by a man with two passengers collided with the motorcyclist, who was traveling westbound on Prince Charles Drive. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.

In addition, an adult male passenger was killed in a traffic accident on Saturday at around 4:30 a.m. Three others were injured but are in stable condition.

The two eldest Christie brothers were employed by the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) and Bahamas Power and Light (BPL). In a joint statement, BPL and BTC expressed their condolences: “Philip was employed by BTC as a member of the Service Delivery Team and his brother, also named Philip, was an apprentice craftsman at BPL. Employees of both organizations were shocked and saddened by the news of this tragedy, which also claimed the life of the third Christie brother. These men were invaluable to BTC and BPL and their contributions will always be remembered.”

Member of Parliament for North Andros and Berry Islands Leonardo Lightbourne mourned the loss of the brothers, who are from Andros. The MP expressed his condolences to the family and urged drivers to be extremely cautious. He said: “On behalf of the entire NABI constituency, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the Christie and Miller families. We pray Psalm 46:1 for you, that our God will be our refuge and strength and help us greatly in times of need.”
