Eben Basson and Chivargo Fredericks are alleged members of the Junky Funky Kids gang. They are suspected of shooting Emaan Solomons in the chest and hand in February 2020 as she was playing outside her Ocean View home.

“Four years later, the alleged killers and gang members are finally being brought to justice for their tragic and brutal murder,” Hill-Lewis said.

“When I met this family months ago, their story was simply heartbreaking, especially as a father of a young daughter of a similar age. Yet this family manages to be generous and warm-hearted. They are remarkable people.”

“Losing a child in these horrific circumstances is something no parent should ever have to experience. My sincere condolences go out to Emaan's family, who have waited a long time – almost four years – for this process to begin.”

“I was happy to be able to support them in court this morning and convey to them that the city stands behind them and that we as parents deeply feel their pain.”

“We are following this case closely and praying that justice is done and that Emaan's killers receive the harshest punishment. Together with the Ocean View community and family, we demand justice for Emaan.”

He reiterated that the City of Cape Town wants to support the police in the fight against gang, gun and drug crime. “It is families like Emaan's who inspire and drive us to get up every day and do our part to make Cape Town safer so that no family has to suffer this deep pain of loss in such a tragic way.”

“Emaan's murder was not senseless but calculated because the gangsters know that innocent people in the communities where they live are terrorized by their actions.”

“Children should be able to play safely on the streets and people should not live in daily fear of crime in their neighborhood.”
