On Monday, a small van, unlit and parked across the A8, caused a chain reaction of accidents involving nine vehicles and eight injuries near Adelsried.

In the early hours of Monday morning, a Ford Transit was driving on the A8 towards Stuttgart. According to the police, the car crashed sideways into a concrete barrier near Adelsried at 4 a.m. It then came to a stop across the motorway. Because the car had no lights and was behind a hill, a Mercedes driver failed to see the van and crashed into it. Then an Audi drove over the wreckage of the Ford, skidded and then also came to a stop on the road. A BMW driver managed to avoid the individual car parts, but then crashed into a semi-trailer.

Mass crash on the A8 near Adelsried: Eight injured and nine damaged cars

Five other cars subsequently drove over car parts that were spread out over a distance of around three kilometers along the highway. A total of seven people were slightly injured in the accidents and one person was seriously injured. Fortunately, the occupants of the Ford had gotten out of the Mercedes before the crash. Emergency services were alerted and took the injured to hospital.

Closure of the A8 due to car accidents near Adelsried

According to initial estimates, the total material damage was around 200,000 euros, according to the police. Four cars had to be towed away by the towing service. The recovery and cleaning work on the motorway lasted until 10:00 a.m. To begin the accident investigation, the emergency services had to close the motorway completely. The Gersthofen motorway police are asking witnesses to the accident to call 0821/3231910.
