Andrew Roselius killed, Deputy Brandon Schreiber of Newton County, Indiana, seriously injured in shooting in Sheldon, Illinois: ISP

SHELDON, Ill. (WLS) – A suspect was killed and an Indiana state sheriff's deputy was seriously injured in a shooting in Illinois on Sunday evening, police said.

Illinois State Police said Iroquois County Sheriff's officers pursued an armed suspect with a suspected hostage into Indiana shortly before 9 p.m. At that point, the Newton County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit.

The pursuit led back into Illinois, and the suspect crashed in Sheldon, ISP reported. The suspect exited his vehicle and exchanged gunfire with police.

A police officer shot the suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, Illinois. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Roselius shot and killed a Newton County Sheriff's Department deputy who was at Iroquois Memorial Hospital before being flown to Carle Trauma Center.

The Newton County Sheriff's Department identified the deputy as Corporal Brandon Schreiber.

Schreiber, who has worked for the Newton County Sheriff's Department for five years, remains in critical condition.

The police found no hostage in the vehicle.

ISP will investigate the shooting before turning its investigation over to the Iroquois County District Attorney's Office.
