Terrorist from Jammu shoots injured soldier – search operation underway

Search operations are underway in Jammu after suspected terrorists opened fire from a safe distance outside the base on Monday. An army personnel was seriously injured in the attack and a large-scale search operation was launched to track down and neutralise the shooters.

The attackers fired several shots at the Sunjawan military station on the outskirts of Jammu at around 10:50 a.m., seriously injuring a soldier, a defense spokesman told PTI.

The operation has been launched and further details are being investigated, the spokesman said, without giving any details about the attacker who shot at the guard.

Officials had earlier said that a brief exchange of fire occurred when the suspected terrorists fired several shots at one of the army posts guarding one of the largest security camps in the winter capital.

The gunshots sparked panic and the local police's Special Operations Group (SOG) rushed to the scene to join the army's manhunt to hunt down the fleeing terrorists.

Although the search operation is still ongoing, there has been no contact with the terrorists so far, officials said.

Sunjawan Brigade is the largest military base in Jammu, which was targeted by Pakistan-backed terrorists on February 10, 2018. Six soldiers and one civilian were killed in the attack. The base is located on the Jammu-Kunjwani bypass, which is part of the national highway to Srinagar, and is surrounded by the densely populated towns of Bhatindi, Jalalabad, Abotabad and Chowadhi.

The attack occurred just two weeks before the parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the first phase of which begins on September 18.
