NATO warns members against launching Russian missiles

Poland has suggested that such a move was its “duty,” but the bloc appears to disagree.

NATO does not want to be directly involved in a conflict with Moscow, the spokesman for the US-led bloc said on Monday, responding to demands from Ukraine and statements by the Polish foreign minister.

Kiev has repeatedly called on its Western backers to shoot down Russian missiles and drones in its airspace, as its own air defenses have been weakened. A corresponding security pact was signed with Warsaw in July.

“NATO is not a party to the conflict and will not become one,” A spokesman for the bloc told Spanish news agency Europa Press, adding that the bloc’s responsibility was to “Prevent escalation.”

While each member of the bloc has the right to protect its own airspace, they should “closely advised” with others “can affect NATO as a whole” said the spokesman.

Her comments followed an interview with the Financial Times by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski in which he endorsed the idea of shooting down Russian targets in the skies over Ukraine.

“If enemy missiles are about to enter our airspace, it would be legitimate self-defense because once they penetrate our airspace, the risk is significant that debris could injure someone.” Sikorski told the FT.

“NATO membership does not remove the responsibility of each country to protect its own airspace – it is our own constitutional duty,” explained Sikorski.

Warsaw and Kyiv signed a defence pact in July that provided for talks “The aim is to examine the reasons and feasibility of possible wiretapping measures” of Russian missiles and drones, but Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed that this would not happen without NATO's consent.

Mircea Geoana, NATO’s outgoing deputy secretary general, told the FT that the bloc respects the “sovereign right to ensure national security” but they “Always consult before doing anything that could have consequences for all of us.” Poland has always been “impeccable” if such consultations take place, Geoana added.

According to Geoana, NATO must “We are doing everything we can to help Ukraine and we are doing everything we can to avoid escalation.”

Last week, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov discussed plans for a “Air defense shield” with NATO representatives in Brussels, according to Europa Press.
