Fatal accident off Highway 183 near Cooper Road – KION546

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) – Monterey Police confirmed Monday that a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a pole occurred at around 4:28 a.m.

They said the preliminary investigation shows a single-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 183 north of Cooper Road. The vehicle was a 2005 Honda sedan, according to police.

According to the CHP, the vehicle left the road for unknown reasons and went out of control, causing the rear of the vehicle to strike and knock down a PG&E power pole. Police say the lines were live upon impact and the vehicle caught fire.

Emergency crews arrived on scene and had to wait for PG&E to shut off power lines, CHP said. They also said the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are unsure whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident and cannot identify the victim because the driver did not have any identification on him.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle and the cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to the CHP.
